My most recent travel was to New York City. I stayed there for two weeks so I covered quite a lot of ground, so to speak. I went there in October 2016, thinking that by that time the full autumn colors would be in full swing, but alas, autumn came late and the foliage haven't changed colors at that time yet. I only got to see it when we went to the countryside during weekend.
When we say New York City, it is synonymous to Central Park. We have seen so many movies where Central Park can be seen. Movies like Home Alone, who hasn't watched this hilarious Christmas movie? And then there's When Harry met Sally that made hearts swoon. If you're into super hero movies, then you've seen the Avengers movie. These are just some of the most famous movies shot here.
So, I stayed in a very swanky apartment on 5th Avenue. I did not have to pay for hotel expenses this time, and food for breakfast and dinner was also covered. All I had to worry about was lunch when I was out gallivanting in all places NYC. Since I stayed in 5th Avenue, all I did to get to Central Park was cross the road, and voila! I was there. All I needed to do was choose which part I wanted to go.
Some basic information. Central Park is an urban park in Manhattan, New York City. It is the most visited urban park in the United States, and one of the most filmed locations in the world. The park covers a total area of 315 hectares right in the middle of Manhattan. It has been designated as a National Historic Landmark by the US Department of Interior in 1962, which in April 2017, placed it on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Let's go on an adventure in Central Park then, and I will share some information about the places I went to. It deserves a full article in itself as the whole park cannot be covered in just one day. Its just not possible. So here goes. Please be informed that Central Park is located along 5th Ave and the streets are perpendicular to it, so when you read 98th and 5th, it means 98th St and 5th Ave.
The nearest place from my address along 98th St and 5th Ave is a place called the Conservatory Garden. This can be found along 105th Street and this is a much loved venue for weddings and other events.
The Reservoir is famed for its running track that encircles the 106-acre body of water.
This place is apparently the favorite jogging place of some influential people and it covers approximately 1/8 of the park and holds over a billion gallons of water. The Reservoir can be found on 86th street. It's just a few blocks from where I stayed.
I wanted to wait for the sunset so I could take more beautiful pictures because this place is known to have majestic sunset views, but alas, this was one place that did not have benches as it is a jogging path. Once I got home, I was already too lazy to go back out again, so I just had to satisfy myself with this picture.
Also within the park in various locations are hotdog stands, for which NYC is also famous for. These pictures were taken on different days, at different times of day, and like I said, it is impossible to explore that totality of the park in just one day as it is so massive. Even if I've been there several times, I am sure there are still places I have not explored.
So if you ever go to New York, Central Park is definitely one of the places you must visit. You will surely love being there.

The Conservatory Garden |
The Conservatory Garden opens daily from 8 am until dusk, and it is the only formal garden found in Central Park. The quiet, calm atmosphere of the Garden, free from runners and bicyclists, makes it an ideal spot for weddings and afternoon walks.
The fountain and wisteria covered pergola |
This is what you can see on the opposite side from the picture above. It is a wrought-iron pergola covered in wisteria. Below it is a tiered yew hedges and a geyser fountain in the center. The calm atmosphere and the beautiful backdrop makes it a favorite venue for weddings and other events.
Conservatory Garden |
To the right of the central section is a garden also in concentric circles, although my iPad couldn't do it justice.
Conservatory Garden |
This is on the immediate right side of the garden and provides respite to those who want to take a break from walking. Benches are scattered around so you can just take your pick and relax, have a snack, or just do whatever you want.
Professional dog walkers |
Another everyday occurrence in Central Park is the sighting of professional dog walkers. People who don't have time to take their pets on a walk hire them to do the job for them. So, at a set certain time of day, these people would go and pick up the dogs from one apartment to another, gather in one place, and walk together as a group. What a joy to see so many dogs gathered in one place at the same time! :-) I'm sure I have never seen anything like it here in the Philippines.
Another place to go to in Central Park is the Belvedere Castle. This attraction is located mid-park on 79th St. and is open daily from 10am to 5pm except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Named for the Italian meaning 'beautiful view', Belvedere Castle offers park goers exactly what its name implies. With its two balconies, it supplies wonderful panoramic views that include some of Central Park's most beautiful and famous landmarks like the Delacorte Theater, the Great Lawn, the Turtle Pond, and the Ramble.
Initially, the castle was just another attraction in the park. This all changed in 1919 when the National Weather Service started taking measurements from the castle's tower with scientific instruments that determine wind speed and direction. Other data such as rainfall was recorded and sent to the weather service's forecast office at Brookhaven National Library on Long Island. That function is still in use up to this day.
The Turtle Pond. |
This is the Turtle Pond as seen from atop one of the balconies of the castle. This pond is located at the base of Belvedere Castle, named in honor of the large number of turtles that reside there along with numerous of birds, fish, frogs and dragonflies.
The Great Lawn. |
This is the Great Lawn taken from ground level. This is located right in the center of Central Park, it is a green pasture of 55-acres that is considered to be one of the most famous lawns in the world. The lawn spans 79th St.-85th St, and it is a great place for picnics, to sunbathe, and even take naps if you wish! :-)
The Ramble. |
Meanwhile, the area known as the Ramble is composed of 38 acres of winding pathways between 73rd and 78th streets. It is often noted for its bird watching opportunities, and one can catch a glimpse of some of the approximately 230 species found in the woods. It was nice walking in the shaded areas and enjoyed the autumn breeze.
Horse-drawn carriage |
Another feature in Central Park is the horse-drawn carriage. I rode it during my very first time in New York which was way back in 2003 if I remember correctly. So this time I just took a picture of it. Couples on a date, families with kids and tourists alike take the tour.
Horse patrol group beside the Metropolitan Museum. |
These are park patrol people. They ride in groups, and they are an attraction themselves, because the horses are huge and magnificent. I was just too shy to take their pictures from the front so I had to quickly snap the camera as soon as they went past me.
Bethesda Fountain |
The focal point of the Bethesda Terrace is the Bethesda Fountain, and it is one of the largest fountains in New York. It is one of the most well known fountains in the world, and the statue at its center was the only sculpture to have been commissioned as a part of the park's original design.
Bethesda Terrace |
Meanwhile, Bethesda Terrace is known for its spectacular views and people watching opportunities, and talented street performers frequent the place. It was such a shame the colors of the leaves have not yet changed while I was there. It would have been so beautiful to see the leaves turn yellow and red and golden all at the same time. Bethesda Terrace is located on 72nd St.
The Lake |
Central Park Lake is the second largest man-made body of water in the park. It provides wonderful opportunities for viewing its abundant flora and fauna from rowboats, which are available for rent in the spring and summer months. One can also take a gondola ride around the lake, or just simply walk and enjoy the magnificent view! I did the latest option, and I did see swans swimming, and some squirrels and other animals in that area while walking.
The Reservoir is famed for its running track that encircles the 106-acre body of water.
