Hi everyone! I also would like to share the things we saw in a local market while we were in Taiwan.
We came across this market purely by chance. We were in a bus, and we were looking for places or shops to buy fresh fruits to bring home.
So far the only ones we've found were night markets, and in Shilin or in Ximending fruits were very expensive as they are priced for the tourists.
On our last day we were in a bus going back to our hotel when I saw a fruit stall and since by then I already knew where the bus stops were, we decided to get off and check it out.
Much to our surprise and delight it was not just a fruit stall but a whole local market with so many goodies to boast!
The market was very clean as well, so we walked around, marveling at all the local products on display. Here I bought almond powder at half the prize of the ones I saw in Juifen or in Tamsui.
Whenever I visit another country, I always try to find a local market and explore it, to see what kind of products the locals eat and consume, and it was such a delight to see so many interesting things.
These are preserved meats, not sure if they slice it thinly like ham in Western countries or useit in soups like the Chinese in Hong Kong do.
If only I had space in my luggage I would have bought so many green vegetables. I would have bought spinach and choi sum, two of the vegetables that I used to eat regularly when I was living in Hong Kong.
This is another kind of preserved meat- more oily than the one above. So I guess the taste would be different. In Hong Kong this would be sliced and stir fried with vegetables for a richer flavor.
This was a snack of some kind- like an egg roll, but I did not try it since I was not sure if the meat would have been cooked thoroughly as it was cooked very quickly.
The big stalks are stalks of kale, and they peel it and slice it into pieces and stir fry with garlic and salt. Yummy!
Local delicacies- some with nuts, while some others didn't, but all looked so yummy.
More preserved meats, this time individually wrapped.
I also noticed that they are into barbecued foods a lot so you can see these skewered foods and people will just buy to cook at home. I guess it saves time on the preparation.
I kid you not. Their fruits were humonguous! This avocado was bigger than my hand!
They don't look so big in photos but they were surely the biggest avocados I have ever seen in my whole life.
Next time you travel to a new city, try to look into their daily lives as well by visiting a local market, and just the touristy places. I tell you, it is a lot fun discovering new things and new places!
